OK, I realize this is the most random post ever, but I looked on the Stanford website, and those directions are a little less than clear, especially for someone who has never been to CA before. But I am proud to say that I managed to make my way down there, take a tour, walk around a bit, and make it back without missing my next flight. I even had time to grab a Double-Double at In-N-Out.
Here it is:
From the airport, take the airtram to the BART station.
Buy a ticket to the Milbrae station (should be $1.50 each way, so if you are making a round trip save yourself the ticket line and just get a $3 ticket)
Take BART from the airport (yellow line) to the San Bruno station (1 stop).
At San Bruno, switch trains and go to the Milbrae station (1 stop).
Here is where you get on the CalTrain, which only runs every 30 mins or so, so be sure to plan accordingly. You will be traveling from the Milbrae station to the Palo Alto station (zone 2 to zone 3), so buy a ticket that covers those zones ($4). If you plan on making the round trip, you may as well buy a day pass to cover both legs ($8).
When you get off at Palo Alto, the Marguerite Shuttle runs every 15 mins to the campus for free. The B-line shuttle “clockwise” takes people from the train station to campus, and the B-line shuttle “counter-clockwise” returns people to the train station.
And there you have it: easy, specific directions that will take you from the airport to the university and back.
